Developing Questionnaire for Research

Questionnaire is tool used to collect data from sample in research. Developing questionnaire for research is not an art but a science. Because it require careful analysis of each item that it includes in order to make sure whether it measures what it is intended to measure or not. It should be valid and reliable. Validity is the accuracy of items while reliability is the consistency. There can be following situations in your research regarding developing questionnaire for research:

Developing Your Own Questionnaire

Developing your own questionnaire itself is a complete research and follows a rigorous data collection and analysis method. It is based of qualitative research. You have to discover the items that make a variable of your interest by collecting data from respondents. You use different statistical techniques such principle component analysis, exploratory factor analysis or other softwares that help you in your research of developing research questionnaire for research. The problem i have noticed with students is that they are not well of of the significance of this process. Immature research students immediately propose that they will develop the measurement tool by themselves neglecting the requirement of the tool being valid and reliable.

Using Existing Measures for Questionnaire

When your using existing measure or already developed measurement items, you are either adapting or adopting the measures. Adapting means, making changes to the existing questions by yourself while adopting means adopting the questions as they are used by the researcher already. In all quantitative research it is appropriate to adapt or adopt the instrument keeping all the ethical constraints intact for developing questionnaire for research.

I hope its helpful for you. Provide your suggestions and feedback on this. Cheers!

Structure & Content of Literature Review

In my previous post on literature review i gave you a tips on how can you conduct literature review for your study. In current post, i am sharing with you the structure & content of literature review. There are certain key points that can help you organizing the literature in effective manner.

Literature review should be structured in a way that should be giving clear picture of the previous researches in the area of your interest and variable you may be using. Begin your literature review with the current trends in your area of interest and particular sector you are studying about for effective Structure & Content of Literature Review. Try possibly mentioning the relevant facts and figures which clearly depict the current situation of the area of your interest. Then relate this situation to the variables of interest. For example your research is about customer satisfaction and brand trust in telecom sector, then you will explain its trend worldwide and particular to you country relating all information to your variables of interest (such as customer satisfaction and trust).

Then start explaining variables of your study one by one. For instance, customer satisfaction and brand trust, in our example, are the variables you are interested in researching about. Explain customer satisfaction theoretically  conceptually and operationally referring to authentic literature. Similarly explain brand trust in the same context. Next comes the time to discuss the empirical literature on relationship between variables of interest and in the end you discuss the gaps identified in the literature raising questions that your research will answer. Eventually you will explain that what you want to do in your research and this would be compete Structure & Content of Literature Review for your study.

I hope it will be a help for you. Kindly provide your feedback. Cheers !

Preparing Effective Resume

Effective resume is the one that gets you a call from the employer for interview and stands out among the pool of other resumes. Preparing Effective Resume definitely requires certain important points to consider. Here i would be mentioning certain important points to consider for Preparing Effective Resume.

  • First of all keep in mind that you have to prepare your resume according to the qualifications and job description by the employer.
  • Key Achievements and Relevant Experience should be mentioned on first page to make it attractive to the employer. Because experience counts more than your education record.
  • While mentioning your experience try making it clear and concise, mention all the important tasks you were assigned on the particular job and matches the current job requirement you are applying for.
  • Key Achievements are also very important factor that helps employer recognizing your potential.
  • Additional skills that can be helpful in performing the job and making your personality stronger (like diplomas, courses, seminars, workshops etc.) are also helpful in making your Resume effective.
  • Mentioning education is must but in minimum space, because it indicates your eligibility.
  • Neither references nor picture should be placed in resume unless they are asked for.
  • Right formatting of your resume is very important because it enhances the appearance and make it look good. So use professional font style, font size, spacing, alignment of text and headings.
  • Do not decorate your resume, keep it simple and professional

Note: For those who are either fresh graduates or do not have ample experience to show on their resume, should mention their experience on relevant projects and assignments conducted in this regard.

I hope these points would be helpful in creating or editing your resume :)

UHS MCAT Entrance Test 2013

MCAT Entrance test is an event for medical students and very important one in their lives. University of Health Sciences (UHS) organizes it every year where thousands of students appear to give exam of the knowledge acquired to achieve their dreams, but a number of dreams are broken due to availability of limited number of seats. UHS MCAT Entrance Test 2013 is here again, going to be held on Sept. 22nd, 2013 at 9:00 am. Around 42,000 thousand students are going to appear in the test against 3405 seats.

UHS MCAT Entrance Test 2013 is going to give opportunity to the lucky ones who scored the most not only in intermediate/A-levels but also in their Entrance Test. Unfortunate things happen to most of the students. Most of students are unable to fall into the merit list due to a gap of just few points and numbers. Majority of those move to other fields of either sciences or some IT or commerce related disciplines. So these students should not feel bad or unfortunate, but they should do their best at whatever they are doing. It doesn't matter which field you opt for, if you are best at it, you are going to nail it. While others would want to try their luck next year by improving themselves.

So i would like to wish all of you who are going to appear in the UHS MCAT Entrance Test 2013, ALL THE VERY BEST !!!

Neuromarketing

Marketing presents a number of ways to understand consumers and research in this field is ongoing which offer various conceptual models and theoretical frameworks for understanding consumer's attitudes and behaviours regarding products/services. Neuromarketing is another emerging and hot domain in marketing which uses technology to track consumer's brain activity on exposure to various stimulus. Neuromarketing is a terminal where brain scicences and marketing meet. There is used technology like Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG) and  Steady state topography (SST). Technology helps answering interesting questions on reasons of consumer's particular behaviour and how their brain works in generating a particular response whether it be cognitive or affective.

Neuromarketing is not common because its costly and have extensive details to deal with. But without a doubt it produces useful results for marketers as many it did for Campbell soup, Frito-lay and BMW. The insights into consumers' brain in always delighting for marketer in order to understand their psychology but technically the working of brain is complex and biologically there are certain brain activity that is triggered by other factor rather predicted or to be observed by the marketers. So its not always the one producing the accurate results. Its future is still questionable because applying it in research and practice would neither be cost effective and easy nor would be the one producing accurate result.

I hope this article helps to the ones looking for an insight in understanding neuromarketing. Cheers !

Trouble Selecting Study Field

Students always get into trouble selecting study field after their matriculation and intermediate. They randomly apply to various institutes with intent to take admission wherever they get one. Here I am talking about those students who lack aim, direction and vision for their future. And dilemma is that majority of the students fall into this category. The reasons for such condition are basically the lack of awareness, proper guidance and illiteracy that are also the major evils of our society. Our education system suffers due to lack of awareness and illiteracy of parents, negligence and lack of support of teachers and absence of career counseling facilities at this level (however same situation exists at every level).

One more problem that I have observed is that students’ minds are penetrated with certain specific fields which they might not be interested in. The encouragement to explore their interests is nonexistent in our society that is the reason its trouble selecting study field. Minds are blocked and stuck which causes failures and frustrations. Interest, visions, abilities, skills and hard work are just words which are never taken seriously by our students. In my personal experience, on asking students of their aims, I just got blank faces in response and silence prevailed all over.

I feel sorry to quote this but our education system is damaged to its roots. Students are not provided with right education at the base level which does not enable them to learn and proceed with the aims. They are confused, considering studies as a burden and relying on deteriorating methods of getting further in their education level. All factors of such sort contributes to their trouble selecting study field.

Not on the system’s end, I would like to suggest here what students can do at their ends to survive this situation. They need to explore themselves and study what matches their interest. Identify their aims, clear the vision and grab opportunities from the surroundings. It can be done by asking for advice of certain teachers who they consider can guide to the best. Their willingness to achieve only comes when they themselves have drive to achieve something. So students, just not waste your time and life, gear up yourselves and hit it!

Stress at Work

Stress is a metal and psychological condition that can both positive and negative impacts. It is caused in response to certain environmental conditions that may act as stimulus. Employees are very much prone to stress because they are exposed to certain situations like deadlines, assignments, tough situation, uncertain work environment, boss's harsh instructions etc. Stress is goods when it gets the best out of you but excessive stress at work may lead to inefficiencies. I believe that it depends on the person exposed to the stress. This dependence make stress an independent construct that can impact employee's performance while person's personality and mental characteristics can act as moderators.

Following factors can contribute to stress at work

Nature of Job Responsibilities

You may be given certain responsibilities which either are below or above your mental and physical capacity. You may cope with this sort of stress by updating your skills, understanding your job closely and checking your emotional attitudes.

Role in Organization

Stress at work may arise from you role ambiguity, role demands and significance of role. You can cope such stress related factors by keeping your abilities of performing simultaneous tasks at the same time intact. Never let situation overcome your emotional state of mind, stay balanced and involve yourself in healthy activity.

Career Development

It involves factors like job promotions, job security, pay raise etc. You can cope such stressors by development of emotional intelligence like social awareness, self-management and relationship management.

Interpersonal Workplace Relationship

This factors includes workplace harassment, biased behaviours, discrimination etc. You need to keep your nerves strong and ignore the ones who try discourage you or take advantage of you. Keep it cool and involve yourself in healthy activities so you may be able to cope in such situations.

Overall Organizational Climate

Overall organizational culture, its environment, management style, communication system etc. can contribute to stress at work. You need to keep the things balanced around you through your positive behaviours, hard work and commitment to your job.

You must not neglect the situation when you start feeling stress, you need to give your best to keep yourself out of the trouble !

Simple tips for Literature Review

Literature Review is very important step in your research process. Your research usually starts with this step and provides you the basis for your research. Literature Review is no doubt time taking but needs all of your concentration and analytical skills so you may be able to identify the gaps and match the theories to come up with conceptual model for your research. Today i am sharing here simple tips for literature review:

Gather relevant articles, which are related to the area of your interest. You may get plenty of literature but you need to keep yourself focused to your topic or area of interest.
  • Start reading articles presented by Guru's in their domain and published in world lass journals because those article would present the true picture and concepts of topics. For instance; those who want to review literature in the field of branding or brand management, must begin with reading Aaker and Keller's articles on branding.
  • Keep making critical notes and important points you may extract, it will help you organizing your thoughts in the end.
  • Try to understand theoretical frameworks mentioned in the literature first and identify various perspectives being adopted in the study, it will help you relating theories and perspectives for your research.
  • Start understanding the general theories and concepts and then come down to the specific areas of your interest.
  • Literature review should be able to highlight for you the key gaps in the research so may be able to build your research in that area.

These are tips i consider worth mentioning for a good literature review. I hope it will be helpful. Cheers !

Marketing to Generation Y

One generation succeeds the other and posses the characteristics which are different from the previous one which may be based on demographic, culture, trends and other habits. Generation Y is the one that includes youth of current era. It includes those who are born between 1980 and 2000 (Lazarevic & Lazarevic, 2009). This generation is technology savvy and use it in their daily life for most of their decision making. Those who are young professionals may use it to save time and students use it to for entertainment purposes. People belonging to this generation have created their own personalized world through online social communities. These behaviours are totally different from those of previous ones. This poses a great challenge to marketers.

Marketers have to continuously redesign their marketing activities for brands in order to match the dynamic behaviours of consumers belonging to generation Y. The consumers of this segment are difficult and disloyal. They share views with each other and influence decisions. So marketers need to closely observe the perception of this generation in order to design the marketing activities that are matching their interests and preferences. I believe that it is critical to identify the ways through which their satisfaction and loyalty can be ensured. They are living in the era of branding where they are surrounded by thousands of brands and its hard to keep sticking to single brand. So some strong brand related associations are needed to be developed that would try creating strong links in their minds. So this "tough to deal with" consumer segment requires marketers to be vigilant in adopting tools and strategies that would satisfy them.

After successful distribution of laptops and solar panels among students belonging to public sector institutes, next initiatives is the scooty scheme for female student by CM Punjab. The aim behind this scheme is to solve the transport problem faced  by girls students. It is one of major issues that creates problems for them and their families. It is expected that the distribution would take place by the end of this financial year.

The eligible girls students for scooty scheme for female students by CM Punjab are those belonging to government sector colleges and universities. These scooties would be the one which runs with battery that needs to be recharged in order to save petrol consumption. It is a good initiative to solve transportation problem since our society needs such kind of awareness but in my opinion this money could have been used to make the public transport system better so they can trust public transport and majority of population can use that.

Organizational Structure

Organizational Structure is all about designed tasks, lines of authority, duties and supervision in achieving organizational objectives. Organizational structure is formed by how the organization is designed around these activities and lines of authority so there can be various types of organizational structures according to their needs. There are six major elements of organizational structure or design.

Work Specialization

It means that your labour is specialized in one task and they do that repeatedly and becomes expert of it. So organizations have to decide what type of work force is required to perform the tasks. Work specialization improves the efficiency and eventually employee productivity. But there is also dark side of being work specialized, it creates monotonous and employees get bored of repeating the same task gain and again. In contemporary environment and organizational structure, managers keeping assigning variety of tasks to employees and keep shifting their jobs to overcome the problems.

Departmentalization

Similar sort of activities are group and performed under particular departments. Now it is to be decided that what types of activities organization is involved in, and according to that departments are created. There are various factors on the basis of which organizations may create their departments in their organizational structure. They may create Functional departments like marketing, finance, HR, IT etc. One more type of departmentalization can be based on types of customers, like end consumers, business customers. Further Geography based departmentalization includes creating departments according to different geographic regions the business is operated. Then there is also product departmentalization based on various product lines. Process departmentalization is based on different processes of business for instance in textile sector ginning, weaving, dying, printing etc.

Chain of Command

Chain of command describes the line of authority in the organization and answers the question that who reports to whom? This element of organizational structure define lines of authority and represents that how much authority is delegated down the line. Upper management empowers employees so they can take decisions. It helps employees identifying that whom they are answerable and from where orders would come.

Span of Control

Span of control defines that how many employees are working under one manager. It also identifies the levels of management in organizational structure. Based on the number of employees under one managers, span of control can be termed as narrow or wider. In narrow span of control manager has less number of employees to supervise. It brings closer supervision but increases the cost since company has to hire number of managers with high salaries. Whereas in wider span of control, there are large number of employees under one manager, in this case efficiency is improved and cost is reduced. Wider span of control is best suitable im situation when managers are experienced and skilled, workers are skilled too and organization is not geographically dispersed.

Centralization/Decentralization

These elements of organizational design decides on how much decision making authority is to be delegated down the line into the hierarchy. Centralization refers to that decision making is done at the higher levels of organization. In such organizational structure, top management considers it wiser to be decision maker rather authorizing employees to do this. Decentralization is opposite of it as it allows giving authority to the employees to make decisions in different scenarios. This helps workers be more efficient and respond to queries and problems immediately.

Formalization

Formalization refers to the extent of rules and regulations being implemented in an organization. Nowadays organizational structures tend to be less formalized with less rules and regulations and more flexible towards employee's timings, policies of working hours, dress codes, attendances and holidays.

Simple steps for Linear Regression Analysis in SPSS

Today i am going to describe you simple steps for Regression Analysis in SPSS. Regression analysis is a statistical test used in finding out the relation between dependent and independent variables for quantitative research. So this test is best suited in a situation when you have a theoretical or conceptual model containing either single  or multiple independent and dependent variables. SPSS is a software that help conducting regression analysis effectively. Following are the steps involved in conducting regression analysis:

  • Firstly you need data, which you must have gathered prior conducting analysis.
  • You create variables with reference to that data, for instance you want to know the relationship between income and price of mobile consumers purchase. So here, the dependent variable would be price and independent variable is income.
  • Then you have to click Analyze appearing in your menu bar, then go to Regression and then Linear. Sequence is Analyze > Regression > Linear
  • A dialog box would appear where you would be able to your variables, you need to shift your dependent variable into Dependent (s) text box and independent variable into Independent (s) text box. It can be done by either dragging the variables of using arrow button beside each text box.
  • If you need to check your data for various assumptions, you have tabs of statistics and options where you can get your data checked for various assumption through plots and tests. Click Continue button.
  • In the end you need to click "OK" tab to get the result in output window.

Teaching Methods in Class

Teaching methods in class have also evolved with fast changing trends in syllabus and use of technology. Students needs to get engaged in lecture during class so they can learn to the maximum. We all are well aware of the fact that majority students have least interest in studies so they loose interest in lecture and you may even find them half sleepy during lecture. These are common issues faced by every teacher. But when there is a problem, a solution needs to be there. Certainly  solution to student's dis-interest is also hidden in variety of teaching methods in class.  Here, i would be sharing certain teaching methods in class which can help keeping students involved in lecture.

Interactive Lecture

Make it an interactive lecture in the class by asking certain questions, invite student's comments and their perceptions on the topic under discussion.

Loud Voice

Loud Voice is essential in keeping control and hold on students, further it also helps keeping them awake and grabbing their attention towards you. But be careful it should not be shrill or annoying for students.

Group Discussion

One of very effective method of student's learning and involvement is group discussion on a certain topic or case study or research paper which not only keeps students involved and busy but also make them using their mental skills. It is really a healthy activity.

Creative Tasks

Give students certain creative tasks and assignments during lecture. For instance, you may ask them for role playing or creating collage regarding particular concept. You can even prepare certain scrabble and flash card games for them which they would participate in with interest.

Talk about Facts and Examples

Share facts with the students, give them real life examples which goes on around them on daily basis. Particularly boys listen to such facts and examples with great interest. but keep you example relevant to you topic so they are able to learn the topic through those facts and examples.

Going Green Matters !!

Green marketing is about positive impact of business activities on society and environment. Prosperous society and healthy environment both are important for an individual that is why going green matters. Organizations neglecting their social responsibility and environmental protection have to bear consequences of criticism and penalties. Depleting natural resources, increased pollution and increased social needs have made companies to go green and save environment and society. The major two aspects of greening are discussed below.

Social Responsibility

It emphasizes the responsibility of organization towards the society. We all are part of our society and we see a lot of social problems around us which can range from illiteracy to poverty and violations of right to health disabilities. When organizations are involved in solving any of such problems, then they are contributing to the betterment of the society. It not only makes the world better around them but also  helps creating positive image in the eyes of consumers. Consumers respond positively to organizations taking such actions and it can be a source of competitive advantage. So i would say that its a win-win situation for both organization and society and it also suggests that Going Green Matters !!

Environmental Protection

Here environment includes all those factors that exist naturally. Those are the natural resources that we use in making many of our daily life activities happen. For instance, we use air to breath, we use water for drinking and cooking, we use oil, gas and coal in cooking, production and various activities. These are the natural resources which are gifted to us by God. But these resources are depleting at fast pace due to various human activities. Like extensive use of oil, gas and coal in manufacturing and households is decreasing the levels of reserves and carbon. Moreover, the waste released as a result of manufacturing and transport vehicle is polluting fresh air and water, which is poses a potential threat from minor to harmful diseases. So after knowing such hazardous effects, we must recognize that Going Green Matters. Organizations responding to environmental concerns play their part in going green and saving the earth. They may offer recyclable products to reduce waste, sustainable products to substitute oil, coal and natural gas and proper mechanisms to deal with waste.

So organizations in current era need to respond to issues mentioned above in order to protect the earth and have healthy and prosperous lives. They being resourceful and having impact can do a lot for the world they live in. Because Going Green Matters!!

Levels of Product

Product is anything we buy from market to satisfy our needs and wants or we can say all the offerings of companies are called products. Thees may be tangible goods or intangible services or marketable offerings. but what is meant by Level of Products? Why are these levels created? I would answer these questions in my post here.

Levels of product suggest that we can view a product as three products on the basis of the intangible benefits it may offer, tangible or actual product and intangible part of product. I will be explaining it here one by one.

Core Product

Core product talks about the intangible benefits offered by products. These benefits are valuable to the consumers because they are not only buying the physical product but also the benefits they can avail from that product. For instance, while buying a motorbike, you want speed to for quick movement from one place to other. Speed is the core benefit here.

Actual Product

Then comes the actual product which comprises of feature, brand name, packaging, labeling of the physical product. In short it that level of product which you receive as tangible product. It means you can feel and touch this actual product.

Augmented Product

These are intangible additional services associated with the product in order to add more value for consumer. It may help creating difference from those of competitors products. Such as free maintenance services offered by auto manufacturers or warranty issued by mobile companies against the purchase of their brands. These additional services can be turned into benefits for consumers to fulfill their needs better.

HEC Ranking of Universities 2013

HEC Ranking of Universities 2013 has been announced, the evaluation criteria was based on Quality and Research. The ranking has been announced in following categories for countrywide universities. I would be mentioning top three universities in the ranking while rest can found on official HEC page.

NUST (Islamabad) has secured top position among large size universities. While University of the Punjab (Lahore) ranked 2nd and University of Karachi (Karachi) as 3rd. None the less, COMSATS (Islamabad) has gained 4th position in the HEC Ranking of Universities 2013.
In medium sized universities, Quaid-e-Azam University (Islamabad) is ranked 1st, followed by Government College University (Lahore) at 2nd place and National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences (NUCES) Islamabad at 3rd.

Business Education

The most popular category of universities and ranking is once again rightly deserved, the competetion between LUMS and IBA (Karachi) is won by Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) Lahore and ranked as top university among all business schools. Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi secured second place while 3rd ranked one is Sukkur Institute of Business Administration (Sukkur).

Punjab Youth Internship Program (PYIP)

Punjab Youth Internship Program is one of the special efforts made for development of youth which aims to provide 50,000 internships to students in Government departments. Launched by Govt. of Punjab, I personally believe it to be a good initiative because i have seen people struggling not only for job but for internship as well. Our industries and business sector is limited, offering limited seats for internees. Punjab Youth Internship Program (PYIP) would not only facilitate students of HEC recognized  institutes but also encourage them to begin with their professional career where they would get to develop, enhance and learn the skills in order to practically enter in the professional world as an employee.

Eligibility

Students who have completed their 16 years of education from HEC recognized public/private university, are eligible for applying for internship under Punjab Youth Internship Program (PYIP). The duration of internship program would be 3 months in total and monthly stipend of Rs. 10,000 would be given to the students. I am glad about this fact of stipend, which is a good amount to at least bear monthly travelling and few other minor expenses.Because in private sector, students not get to receive stipend at all. It would keep the interns motivated.

Students would be given certificates at the end of their internships under Punjab Youth Internship Program (PYIP) and their performance would be evaluated closely by the respective organizations/departments they are working in. It has been declared clearly that i would not lead to further job in the same organization. Its only an internship, so students should not build hopes of getting associated to the organization as an employee on the bases of their internship performance. To get job in Govt. dep./org., the formal procedure is followed.

Overall i rate this program very good because it is really a productive opportunity for students who need such initiative badly after completing their studies. It would boost their energies and can play vital role in brightening their future.

Application:

Students can apply through rozee.pk. Online application is encouraged to make the procedure quick and prompt. For official webpage of Punjab Youth Internship Program (PYIP) click here.
