Reviews: Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology Islamabad

FUUAST holds the distinction of being the first Pakistani university which aims to have Urdu as its official language for medium of instruction and teaching. Although the mission sounds great but so far university management is unable to show any great progress as other private universities with same age have shown. From campus to faculty, from management to administration, from facilities to staff everything needs a lot of improvements. University management is crowded by political interests so they are not really focusing on their real objective which to provide excellent education by promotion Urdu. Administration is not putting its cent percent to make studying at FUUAST a memorable experience for students as they are not providing the best of the facilities which are a must for a good study environment.

One thing university management should consider that is they are preaching a very unique idea of teaching in Urdu which has a huge potential. But in today's job market English is the main requirement so FUUAST graduates have to face this basic difficulty to get a job and if the knowledge they got is also not competitive with other English medium private universities then they will have to fight more harder to compete with other students in job market. So if University improves its "everything" then there is a huge potential for its mission.

Now lets have a quick review of different aspects of university.

History:     The University was established on 13th November 2002 under . The university started functions in November 2002 by taking over two federal government colleges namely Federal Urdu Science College, Karachi and Federal Urdu Arts College , Karachi .

Basic Information:       Currently university have departments of Economics, Business Administration, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics and Urdu. University is located in G-6 sector of Islamabad.

Student Talk:       I don't get chance to have a face to face conversation with university students but i got their feedback on an online survey. Students are not too much happy with the university overall and they are very concerned about the politicization in university. They are also not very happy with the campus building.

Facilities:      As I have mentioned above that students are simply not happy with the facilities provided to them because there is no air conditioning on the campus, no grounds for students for extra curricular activities, cafeteria quality is very low, class rooms are in pathetic condition. Science laboratories are a bit better than other facilities. So I ranked the facilities in FUUAST as Poor.

Faculty:      University's faculty is a blend of masters, M Phils and PhDs but most of the faculty members are M Phil. As I said above that there is a lot of politicization in the university so teachers are also not focused on their real job. They are not very much cooperative with students.

Market Worth:     There is no special market worth for University's graduates as they have to fight on two things first on their quality of education and secondly on their medium of instruction being Urdu.

Programs Offered:
  • Under Graduate programs:
    • B.Sc (Electrical Engineering)
    • BS (Computer Science)

University of South Asia - USA

University of South Asia is yet another institute which wants to provide every degree and any course within that degree. Although USA's main campus is literally a small building considering its offerings but they are determine to offer each and every possible degree. Who much they have succeeded in their "one in all" mission is a bit tragic story as non of their major programs like computer science and business administration got ant attention from job market. I have seen some of USA's brilliant Computer Programmers but that seems like their own skills and interest in CS, but it would be unjust if I don't give any credit to the institute so one can say that if you have good interest in CS then USA could help you by providing you some basic facilities but never expect to receive huge welcome by market in fact prepare yourself for " what you said where you have done your MCS, USA? what is that?". Same is the case with their Business department.

USA is famous for its fun living style of study although its been administrated by an army man but students find it joyful to study at USA. This is a major reason why USA attracts students every year and get them enrolled anytime in the year, yes this is true this institute hardly got any admission criteria and the one they got is open for change at anytime. A friend of mine got admission even after their semester is started.

USA's O&A level repute is good but i never met any of those students so i better no to discuss more else than their repute is good for O&A levels.

STUDENT TALK:          As I said above is that students likes studying at USA because if its tension free environment and students are satisfied with their studies because as a matter of fact its a very different class which is studying at USA some call them "High Class" some with other names but I haven't seen anyone who is serious about his or her studies. I find some students complaining about management behavior which is offcourse not for studies but other issues. I only got one comment which is some kind of studious that is " Management should hire some PhDs teachers".

FACILITIES:          USA got a very up-to-date computer lab in its small campus with lush green little lawns. Class rooms are air conditioned so that the labs and cafeteria. University got a small transport service which is run by rental buses. Cafeteria is although air conditioned but food quality is not up to standard. Campus is kept very clean and proper care is given on this matter which is quit good. So if I exclude the size of the campus then overall facilities are Average".

PROGRAMS:        I'll give you complete list of the programs offered by USA but right now I'm unable because university's official website is malfunctioned right now which is quit surprising for my. In the mean time check your luck at this Link.

WEBSITE:        Here is the link for official website of University of South Asia.

International Islamic University - IIU Islamabad

International Islamic University is the only one of its kind in Pakistan and provide a real Islamic meaning of education to both Pakistanis and outsiders. With promising management and pure dedication towards education and education in pure Islamic way. Its not that IIUI only provide Islamic education as its name suggests, its a complete package of Management sciences to engineering and from social sciences to islamic studies. The whole idea behind this institute is to provide young nation the latest education with some Islamic touch. Well it seems quit impresive, the whole idea, but the question here is that weather they really provide what they claim? My answer is yes. They are really providing a brilliant enovironment rather Islamic enovironment to students which is producing some great youngsters, altough IIUI's students are not yet getting welcome response from market but they got a great potential to capture the market in really near future.

IIUI is growing with great pace because of two major reasons; first which is its greatest strength is its students who are really hardworking and passionate about their studies and second is its management's dedication about this institute.

Teachers are cooperative to students who get frequent assignments to do and marked on a lenient scale so students are quit satisfied with their teachers. Most of the teachers Masters which for me is a weakness at the university's end because at this competitive market you got to have some real experienced fellows to make your students something like brilliant.

Some of the weaknesses are as I mentioned above about the qualification of teachers is mostly Masters. Generally administration is very non-cooperative with students which create little bit of dissatisfaction among them so they, the administration, need to be more cooperative with students. And also students don't have much liberty to complaint against management which quit unjust on the part of Management. Lets have some quick review of different aspects of IIUI.

HISTORY: Back at 1980 this institute established but construction of its new campus made it possible to expand and offer a whole new line of programs. Old campus was located around the Faisal Mosque which was not much spacious to make it a quality place to learn so the management decided to build a new and large campus.

BASIC INFORMATION: New campus of IIUI is situated in sector H-10 of Islamabad. In this purposely build campus they consturct seprate hostels for male and female students. Education in IIUI is also sperate for male and female students which somehow matching with all the Islamic concept behind this institute.

STUDENT TALK: Students are really satisfied with this institute's education standards and also with the teachers' attitudes. But a students of IIUI told me on the behalf of others that management and administration is not much cooperative with students and don't give proper attention towards their problems. Other then this complaint they seems like happy with this institute.

FACILITIES: Facilites at International Islamic University are above average because of these plus and negatives. Library, Computer and Science labs are above average with library having huge amount of books, journals and magzines reaching almost 1.5 million in numbers and computer labs are up-to-date and science labs are equiped well.

Full transport is provided to students of twin cities. Hostel facility is also there for both male and female students. Class rooms are air conditioned and well maintained. Cafeteria is not up to the mark as it is low on quality and variety. Overall all campus building is also clean and well maintained.

PROGRAMS OFFERED: IIUI is offering different programs in following faculties.

  • Arabic Language and Islamic Civilization
  • Engineering and Technology
  • Basic and Applied Sciences
  • Islamic Studies
  • Languages, Literature and Humanities
  • Shar'iah and Law
  • Social Sciences
  • Management Sciences

University of Engineering and Technology - UET Lahore

Guest Post by: Aisha Anwer

I was asked to write about my university, that is, University of Engineering and Technology (U.E.T.), Lahore, where I had graduated from. I said okay to it, but when I sat down to start writing, I thought to start with the history of the university, to kind of take a tour from past to present and probably talk about what promises for future does it make. So I decided to consult U.E.T’s website for that, and while I was going through it, I thought when they have all the information about the university, and even I am consulting the university’s website to write for this blog, then why bother writing in this blog? My answer to my own question was kind of the definition of this blog: as the name suggests, this blog is the Education Inn, a house for all the educational information, coming to this one place the reader can find most of the basic and a lot more information about many institutes in Pakistan, besides other educational information. So, I thought it is okay even if I consult U.E.T.’s website for writing this post, the purpose is to provide the information ‘under one roof’.

Here is an
outline of what you will get to read in this post, about U.E.T. Lahore

  • My Personal Experience
  • History of the university
  • Admission Procedure
  • Number of Faculties and Departments*
  • Research Institutes

*I will explain the difference between the two as well, so please hold your thoughts, if any, on that

My Personal Experience: My personal experience of the university has been great ! I will not say that U.E.T. is the perfect place to be, but yes it is one of the best ! One of the things I noticed about U.E.T. after paying some visits to FAST and LUMS, (this is my personal observation, and you are free to disagree) that U.E.T. is for everyone ! Whether you are the preseident’s son, or a farmer’s. Besides the moderate fee structure, the environment is such that nobody will fall prey to any complexes ; superiority or inferiority. I simply love this fact about U.E.T. As far as my educational experience is concerned, U.E.T. is good educationally, that we know from its entering the compitition in world’s best universities. But I cannot say that everyone of the faculty is the best ! There are people of all kinds in every group ! But we were taught by teachers who were nothing but the source of all knowledge you could ever imagine ! (for the most part during the four years stay at university)

History: The main campus of UET is located in the northern part of Lahore on the GT road, near the Shalimar Gardens. The institution was established in 1921 as the ‘Mughalpura Technical College’. Later it became the ‘Maclagan Engineering College’, a name given to it in 1923 when Sir Edwards Maclagan, the then Governor of the Punjab who laid the foundation stone of the main building, now called the Main Block. At that stage the institution offered courses of study in only two disciplines; Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. In the year 1932, the institution was affiliated with the Punjab University for award of a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering. In 1947 the institution was offering well-established B.Sc. degree courses in civil, electrical and mechanical engineering.

In 1954 it started a Bachelor's Degree course in Mining Engineering, the first-ever of its kind in the country. However, the real expansion and development of the institution commenced in 1961 on its transformation into the ‘West Pakistan University of Engineering & Technology’, and within a few years Bachelor's Degree courses were started in Chemical Engineering, Petroleum & Gas Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Architecture, and City & Regional Planning. Later, the University started to develop its postgraduate programs, and by 1970's it was offering Master's Degree Courses in various specializations of engineering, architecture, planning and allied disciplines. Later, Ph.D. Degree Program was also instituted in a number of disciplines.

Today, U.E.T. stands among the top 600 universities of the world, according to the THES & QS World University Ranking

Admission Procedure: The admission procedure in the university is almost the same as any other engineering institute in Pakistan. For the undergraduate admissions, U.E.T. conducts the entry test usually somewhere in July-September . Newspaper advertisement is given to call for applications, wherein the interested candidates, who have atleast 60% marks in F.Sc. or equivalent examinations, apply.

This year, i.e. 2009, U.E.T. introduced an online facility to apply, to make the application procedure simple and easier for the students from outside Lahore. For this purpose laboratories with guidance on application procedure, in some of university ’s departments were allocated, to help the students who do not have computer or Internet facility at their homes. After the students have applied, they are issued a kind of roll number slip, with the test date, time and centre mentioned on it. The entry test carries a total of 400 marks, with negative marking rules of minus 1 for each wrong answer. U.E.T.’s entry test is valid for all the engineering universities of Punjab, as well as some reciprocal seats in other provinces. The final result is calculated by using the formula 70% F.Sc/equivalent marks + 30% entry test marks.

First merit list is displayed usually one week after the entry test. Minimum three and at times 4-5 merit lists are displayed. So, even if some candidate did not get into the faculty of his choice, he still has a chance of being upgraded (provided they gave the option in the form they filled) and have secured admission in the university. Few years back there were separate self-finance seats, but now they have been merged in the open merit seats, but other special seats like over-seas etc. still exist.

Faculties and Departments: Now coming to the faculties and departments, faculty can be thought of as a container of departments, departments are sub-divisions/parts of faculties.

1. Faculty of Electrical Engineering
» Department of Electrical Engineering
» Department of Computer Science & Engineering
2. Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

Faculty of Management Studies - PCBA

Faculty of Management Studies, formerly known as Punjab College of Business Administration, is run under University of Central Punjab(UCP). I am gonna use PCBA for FMS in my later writings, so PCBA was established in 1991 and since then gradually PCBA has become a little bit of status symbol, although the study methods at PCBA are quit good and teachers are also really cooperative with students but even then the overall development of students is not at that level that is supposed to be. I mean yes they are confident and speak good English but this might not be enough for market to attract to someone as market demands for more knowledge and broad tinkling level of students.

One thing which is very common in UCP's every institute is that they treat their students like school going students and administration treated them very rudely which is quit demotivated for students that they don't have liberty to complaint against management or faculty. PCBA's campus is meeting the new demands of new ara, because campus is although well maintained but its not a vast one and there is a big need to build a new purposely build campus. Well UCP is building a campus near Shoukat Khanam Hospital but I am not sure whether PCBA is also going there or not but for me they must move at least one or more programs to that campus.

lets talk about studies and faculty at PCBA, most of the faculty members are Masters and quit young but few are experienced. But almost all are very cooperative with students and really give focus on syllabus and course contents. Grading criteria is neither very tough nor very lenient and falls some where between that. Usually students got monthly assignments.

At PCBA events like musical conerts are arranged sometimes like may be once in a half year or so and they love to call Atif Aslam to perform there which is quit boring for students.

HISTORY: Eastablished in 1991 PCBA operates by itself but when UCP got charter from government they come under the charter of UCP and now issue degrees of UCP. Very recently PCBA has changed its name and become Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) and from now on it will be called by this name. Even in my remaining review.

BASIC INFORMATION: FMS is situated in Gulberd Lahore with very "hand to mouth" campus. It means that, that campus only got that much capacity which is hardly full filling their need. But that small campus is very well maintained like all other institutes of Punjab Group.

FACILITIES: Facilites at FMS are not quit up to the mark, letme give a detailed review about facilites at FMS, one thing which is acceptable is their library which is quit rich but computer labs are not more then average, transport facility is very poor and mostly for girls only, no hostel but cafeteria is good and also the class rooms are very well developed with full air condtioned. Not a single play ground is there and common room for girls is reasonable. So overall facilites can be rated as Average.

STUDENT TALK: Students at FMS are very much alive and cooperative. After talking to them I have noticed only one thing that they all are concerned about the strickness of the management and the school alike enovoirnment.

MARKET WORTH: As I said above that in market there is not a good demand for PCBA's graduates they genrally start with around 1500 which is average start for a MBA. If you talk about further admissions I have seen IBA of Punjab University refusing a BBA of FMS on grounds that they don't accept UCP's degree but I also seen old Punjabians in LUMS. So its all depend on students' personal capabilities.

PROGRAMS OFFERED: FMS offer purely business related programs upto masters level only, programs are:

  • Bachelors of Business Administration - BBA 4 years
  • Masters in Business Administration - 3 years after 2 year bachelor and 2 year after 4 year non-business bachelor.
  • MBA - 1 year after BBA*
  • MBA Excutive
  • MBA - Banking and Finance
* HEC has given a new instruction to all the institues that the MBA after 4 year BBA is must be at least of 18 months.

MBA at UET - Institute of Business&Management

Recently University of Engineering as established its new department "Institute of Business & Management" which is offering EMBA, MBA and BBA. UET has a strong reputation in allover the country for its excellent education in engineering field. But they have now decided to go with the flow so starting a business department is because of the trend among all the universities to have a separate Business Studies department. But they have started this with a bit different style, I mean they market their MBA at best.

Classes for E-MBA are in process since May 2009 which is offering 3 courses of 9 credit hours. I must say that IBM has really shown a great future to potential students by their strong marketing. They are also offering a 4-year BBA but here in this article I am gonna put my focus on their MBA program which is somehow hot in town.

UET under the name of IBM has started a 2-year MBA program for those who have a 16 years educational background. They got huge response from students because of two reasons, one is of course the name of UET and the other is that they have done their home work extremely well and targeted the right segment of market. They really design their product so well that every one got attracted towards this. They maintained a very strict admission criteria including test performance followed by a interview.

Some things I really liked in IBM like they give orientation sessions to their new MBA students of more then 6 hours and for more then a week, in which they helped their fresh entrants to improve their communication skills and also open up their mind for fastly changing business environment. And now they ara starting workshops on Microsoft Office to build some basic computer skills in students.

One thing I am not sure about is their faculty, I mean yes they have hired some very experienced, professional experienced personnel but only two of them are PhD and not more then 3 are have a post graduate degree. Some are of engineering background which made me thing that how can a engineer can teach Business, because he have served some multinational as a Manager it does not mean that he has enough knowledge business to teach those students. I am not quit sure that what visiting faculty their are going to have but I suggest that they must got some experienced teachers with strong Business Management background.

So far so good is best fit for IBM's MBA as they really started well, I am really looking fowarard for Market's Response for UET's MBAs. Findout more about IBM at their official Website.

University College Lahore

University College Lahore is one of the institutions of Pakistan which is providing international education within national boundaries. It has its affiliation for Bachelors with University of London, External Programme and for GCE A’ Level, with Cambridge University. The education and methods are set at par to provide excellent education and learning environment just as abroad. University College Lahore is not very much recognized in Pakistan as a very less number or only a particular part of the society knows about it. Tough it is not a commonly known institute like LUM, FAST or LSE to everyone but it holds priority for those who know about it. Students, who do O or A-levels, usually prefer it. To be at UCL is a thing of status, modernity, chill, sumptuousness and class.

UCL has not got a very good repute when it comes to the environment established for students. Whenever a child asks their parents that he/She wants to be at UCL, they hesitate and some directly ban to even ask for that. The way of life at UCL does not suit our culture, religion and moral values. A high class usually opts for UCL. I hope you have got the idea what I am trying to explain. I do not consider it an institution for mediocre or decent middle class families. Being an international education providing university, education is quite costly here. Normal people can neither afford the cost of studies as well as the customs and way of life at UCL.

But its good option for those who wish to acquire international education, but somehow unable to go to abroad. They can get those degrees over here in their national boundaries. Along with education, UCL aims for the personality building of students to make them a better part of the society and the corporate world.

Its one & only campus in Lahore is located at Raiwind Road Lahore. University College Lahore have three departments of education; A’ level GCE, LLB (Hons) and School of Economics & Management. They also provide some diploma courses regarding Law and Business Management. Since a less number of people are familiar with this university and comparatively very less number of students go there because of expenses so in market of Pakistan, they do not occupy big space.

Facilities at UCL are up-to-mark. Being the campus for international studies, it has got excellent facilities to complement the studies and to surface all the talents of the students. The library, Laboratories, cafeteria, transportation, everything matches the cost students pay to be at UCL. There is no hostel facility at UCL but they can help finding it students in the vicinity of the campus.

PROGRAMS OFFERED at UCL:

  • GCE A’ Level

The undergraduate programme at UCL presently offers the following degrees in the School of Economics & Management:

  • Bsc Economics and Management

Unversity of Sargodha

The university I am going to give review on is relatively new one and yet to be come under highlights of educationalists. Just like Government College Lahore, Sargodha university is converted from Govt. College Sargodha in 2002 and charter as degree awarded institution. Since then they are efforting to give quality education in a small part of the country but unfortunately haven't got success yet. They have got a huge campus yet to be fully utilized in terms of building and quality of education. University is offering many programs under different departments including Medical, Business, Commerce, Arts, Economics.

One department which is really growing getting recognation by other institutes is "Department of Economics" . And reason behind is nothing else then the quality of education which they are giving to their students. They have excellent faculty including 8 PhDs. And when you have human capital with qualification like this, its abvious to acheive the highets of success which DOE is enjoying.

Unveristy's old building is kind of tradintional one which is well maintained but new blocks are designed with keeping in view the medern requirments of sociaty. Class rooms at UOS are not air conditioned but neat and clean and spacious.

You don't heard about UOS as its new in the field and haven't got any attention from the critics and if they continued to provide middle level education they might not got that attention ever. So they have to hire some highly qualitfied faculcty memebers as they did in Economics department. I talked to some students of UOS and according to them, there is very friendly envoirnment in class that is not bad but when its over-friendly, problems begin. So they need to improve class envoirnement to some extent to have some edge.

HISTORY: Sargodha College was first eastablished in 1929 in Shapur which was shifted to Sargodha in 1946 and since then it is facilitating all the nearby area of for high quality education.
College start graduation classes in 1987. With rapid growth college become Universtiy and started different under the name of Univeristy Of Sargodha.

STUDENT TALK: As I said above that I'av talked to number of students, ex-students of UOS and they were like not satisfied with the quality of education and atmosphere of unveristy. One of them said " sargodha unveristy is no where near the other Govt. universities like PU, Quid-e-Azam, BZU but they have to potential to gain some name in future years and for that they got to improve some basic things".

FACILITIES: Like other public sector universities unversity of sargodha also lack in the area of facilities, they have a central library which quit good but not as up-to-date as it is
spoused to be, they recently installed a digital library function which is good. Class rooms are not air conditioned but yes furniture is comfortable. On campus enovirnment is very friendly infact over friendly which is not appreciated for studies. They don't have backup elecricity which is a big negative in todays Pakistan.

WEBSITE: UOS's website is uos.edu.pk.

COMSATS Institute of Information and Technology

For me COMSATS is not a big name in educational institutes, let me very straight forward. But yes it has got a good repute in computer sciences. But I actually heard a lot about COMSATS's Chemistry department. I have asked a relative of mine who is a student of COMSATS Islamabad to write a review of COMSATS for me. So here is the guest review by Sadaf.

"COMSATS Institute of Information Technology got university charter in 2000 and today it is ranked as 7th top university in HEC ranking for research and development. This university is renowned in Pakistan for its sophistication and discipline. Its faculty and students mutually create a healthy learning atmosphere where one feels motivated and enthusiastic to learn. I am enrolled in its MS Mgmt program for last 2 years and each minute I’m spending here increase my overall knowledge base in a positive manner. The library is up-to-date and we have the facility of digital library as well. Digital library enables us to access online databases of journals and research papers. The faculty is highly qualified and experienced. Comsats offers its students bus and hostel facility. The main campus is in Islamabad and there are various campuses in prominent cities of Pakistan like Rawalpindi, Lahore, Abbottabad etc.
Comsats is famous for its IT and business studies. Along with these departments Comsats is offering courses in Engineering, Architecture, biological sciences and meteorology. These academic programs are available on both graduate and post graduate levels.
My experience with this university is remarkable in all aspects. I’ve learnt a lot from my esteemed teachers and colleagues. Join this university to add professionalism in your academic life."

So according to her this institute is really got something to offer to its students and students are quite satisfied as well, but ME? still not impressed. But yes you can join COMSATS for its low fee and average studies. Quality of study is higher then the price of it.

HISTORY: The CIIT operates under the supervision of The Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South. CIIT become functional in 1998 and after a good response got charter in 2000 as degree awarding institution.Since then it is providing educational facilities in more then 6 cities.

BASIC INFORMATION: CIIT have campuses in Islamabad, Lahore, Wah, Abbottabad, Attock and Sahiwal. Besides of these they have planned 6 more campuses in different cities of Pakistan including Karachi, Quetta, Vehari and Gujrat. Their Islamabad campus is a vast campus covering acres of land and having a well purpose build building on it with full facilities.

STUDENT TALK: I have been studied with one of students of COMSATS and also one of my co-worker was a MBA from COMSATS Lahore. What I have observed is that the quality and presentation skills were lacking in them and after talking to them about CIIT, both of them were not satisfied with the level of education of at CIIT. But when it comes to campuses and classrooms and cafeteria and lawns and library and Lab, they were like almost satisfied. Being with them is my main source of knowledge about CIIT.

MARKET WORTH: CIIT haven't got a repute in market like oh you are from COMSATS, come and sit, you are selected. Basic staring level after doing MBA from COMSATS is not more then 15K average. And when it comes to Computer Sciences when you got a competitor like FAST you have to give to 200% to compete in market. But jobs are available for students of CIIT and they have a good scope for further admissions.

FACILITIES: As I said above that they are facilitating their students with good facilities but their cafeteria needs to be improve in its taste and variety. Other then this, things are quit well at Lahore and Islamabad campuses of CIIT. Don't any reference in other campuses so can't say anything about them. Just hope they are also good.

PROGRAMS OFFERED: CIIT offered these programs in its campuses.
