My BBA at IBA Lahore

My BBA at IBA Lahore will always be remembered throughout my life. Four years spent in this department can never be erased from my memories, each and every moment spent there has some sort of significance. I have started feeling it like a home to me as four years of my life has been passed in it's seminars, cafe, lab, library, corridors, having fun with friends and chatting and gossiping.

To start with my very first day at the university, i entered with a new hope and fresh aspirations, i did not know anyone over there, but in a matter of days i started to k now a lot people over there. I remember us sitting at the door side in a circle having fun, chatting and playing truth and dare. We were new to each other but moving towards knowing each others.

When I became part of IBA, at that time it consisted of only one building, not large in size, few rooms and seminars and labs. Whereas new building adjacent to it was under construction. After a year new building was also available to us, it is awesome, well constructed, airy, wide,a number of seminars, modern lab and library and cafeteria. Infrastructure and facilities at IBA is no less then any renowned private institute. It is good enough to compete with those top ranked business schools in our country.

Every Semester used to bring new excitements, new instructors, new experiences and fresh concepts. Compilation of project at the very last day, preperation of presentation at the very last moments, always refusing for assignments even though it was given once a semester.

That all is unforgettable.

A week before exams was considered to be preparation week, everyone used to be busy in collecting notes from the photocopier, getting prints, taking classes from friends, group discussions... I can never forget those days.....

Experience with teachers have been good. I found a few brilliant ones, some were good and there were average or below as well. I can say that i was not totally satisfied with teachers over there.

Frequency of events was also disappointing there, One annual sports gala and a combine farewell and welcome for BBA, have always been under criticism by us, but we could nothing about that. But still we used to find ways to have fun.

IBA has given me a whole experience, an experience of four years, including somewhat professional and social. No doubt i have learnt there but there is more potential, which can make IBA most desirable institute.

Faculty of Management Studies - PCBA

Faculty of Management Studies, formerly known as Punjab College of Business Administration, is run under University of Central Punjab(UCP). I am gonna use PCBA for FMS in my later writings, so PCBA was established in 1991 and since then gradually PCBA has become a little bit of status symbol, although the study methods at PCBA are quit good and teachers are also really cooperative with students but even then the overall development of students is not at that level that is supposed to be. I mean yes they are confident and speak good English but this might not be enough for market to attract to someone as market demands for more knowledge and broad tinkling level of students.

One thing which is very common in UCP's every institute is that they treat their students like school going students and administration treated them very rudely which is quit demotivated for students that they don't have liberty to complaint against management or faculty. PCBA's campus is meeting the new demands of new ara, because campus is although well maintained but its not a vast one and there is a big need to build a new purposely build campus. Well UCP is building a campus near Shoukat Khanam Hospital but I am not sure whether PCBA is also going there or not but for me they must move at least one or more programs to that campus.

lets talk about studies and faculty at PCBA, most of the faculty members are Masters and quit young but few are experienced. But almost all are very cooperative with students and really give focus on syllabus and course contents. Grading criteria is neither very tough nor very lenient and falls some where between that. Usually students got monthly assignments.

At PCBA events like musical conerts are arranged sometimes like may be once in a half year or so and they love to call Atif Aslam to perform there which is quit boring for students.

HISTORY: Eastablished in 1991 PCBA operates by itself but when UCP got charter from government they come under the charter of UCP and now issue degrees of UCP. Very recently PCBA has changed its name and become Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) and from now on it will be called by this name. Even in my remaining review.

BASIC INFORMATION: FMS is situated in Gulberd Lahore with very "hand to mouth" campus. It means that, that campus only got that much capacity which is hardly full filling their need. But that small campus is very well maintained like all other institutes of Punjab Group.

FACILITIES: Facilites at FMS are not quit up to the mark, letme give a detailed review about facilites at FMS, one thing which is acceptable is their library which is quit rich but computer labs are not more then average, transport facility is very poor and mostly for girls only, no hostel but cafeteria is good and also the class rooms are very well developed with full air condtioned. Not a single play ground is there and common room for girls is reasonable. So overall facilites can be rated as Average.

STUDENT TALK: Students at FMS are very much alive and cooperative. After talking to them I have noticed only one thing that they all are concerned about the strickness of the management and the school alike enovoirnment.

MARKET WORTH: As I said above that in market there is not a good demand for PCBA's graduates they genrally start with around 1500 which is average start for a MBA. If you talk about further admissions I have seen IBA of Punjab University refusing a BBA of FMS on grounds that they don't accept UCP's degree but I also seen old Punjabians in LUMS. So its all depend on students' personal capabilities.

PROGRAMS OFFERED: FMS offer purely business related programs upto masters level only, programs are:

  • Bachelors of Business Administration - BBA 4 years
  • Masters in Business Administration - 3 years after 2 year bachelor and 2 year after 4 year non-business bachelor.
  • MBA - 1 year after BBA*
  • MBA Excutive
  • MBA - Banking and Finance
* HEC has given a new instruction to all the institues that the MBA after 4 year BBA is must be at least of 18 months.

University Of Management And Technology - UMT Lahore

Ever since ILM renamed as UMT they are progressing, and progressing well. A purpose build campus is under construction and some part is already completed and functional. I am not sure about their actual position but they are good at one thing, that is they are really satisfying their students. Students of UMT are in confidence as they are studying in some institute with LUMS or LSE caliber. And having satisfied customers is a great asset for any organization and for an educational institute students are the customers.

Claiming a non profit organization still they are charging comparatively more fees. For a 4 year BBA you have to pay more then 600K and for 2 year MBA fee is 475K. So its kind of joke that they still cliam to be non profit organization after charging this much fee. And I wonder that why should a student pay this much havey amount for an institute like UMT because no doubt they are progressing well but when you compare to outcome of their degree fee is much high.

As far as my opinion is concerned I am totally not impressed with UMT, because when I talked about UMT with some professionals of MCB Bank the response was not quit satisfactory, some of them was not of good opinion about UMT and other not even know nothing about UMT but remember ILM.

One more thing is that an educational institute is supposed to be a very neat and clean place but as far as UMT is concerned its campus is not well managed and you feel suffocation over there. Although building is still under construction but one must not compromise on cleanness. So they should give some attention on their atmosphere.

Now lets have a quick review of different aspects of University of Management and Technology.

HISTORY: Back in 1990 Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) was established in Lahore. ILM grow gradually and by 2004 they applied for university charter which was granted. So ILM become University Of Management and Technology (UMT) .

BASIC INFORMATION: With their Vision of LEARNING and Mission of LEADING UMT is claim to producing future leaders and decision makers but I wonder that how come an institute with 200 BBA's can compete with an institute which is concentrating only on 35 or 40 BBA's. So they have to reduce their number of seats for every program and strict their admission criteria. UMT pick students from 40 to 45% and put them into market by grooming them to may be 60 to 70%. so how a 70% student can lead future.

One plus point for UMT is that management is very friendly with students and help them in every aspect of their life which gain students' loyalty.

STUDENT TALK: Talking with some of UMT students was very interesting for me because no doubt they were so much confident about their institute I find them comparing UMT with LSE and on some times with LUMS even. They were satisfied with library, cafe, campus infact each and everything. And having this much satisfied customers any organization can grow, and UMT is growing !

FACILITIES: A purpose-built campus with more then 1000 computers and a library with 50000 books and over 1500 CDs/DVDs with subscription of online libraries and journals their facilities are good. Hostel is also available, hostels are located separately on Wahdat Road with pick/drop facility. So for their facilities and corporation with students I have to give a Good to UMT.

MARKET WORTH: Now that is the main point of my discussion about UMT that if they are charging huge amount of money for their programs what is the worth of UMT degree in market. A MBA from UMT may be get a 20K job average, but job placement is good University help its students in getting jobs and internships. But when you compare outcome with fees as I said above its not satisfactory.

PROGRAMS OFFERED: UMT is currently offering degrees in these disciplines.

Institute Of Business Administration - IBA Lahore

In business administration IBA Lahore secure some position in study market not like big giants like LUMS, LSE, IBA but they have some good reputation in industry. I mean organizations like IBA-ians. Recently they got new building build right before the old one. In new building classes are quit modern, seminar rooms are their and students sometimes feel jealous for those who got them. Some teachers are highly qualified but mostly lecturers are new but competent. I'av visited IBA many times and I noticed changes every time, good changes of course. Under they supervision of Dr. Muhammad Ehsan Malik IBA is growing. One thing that is very attractive for those who cannot afford expenses studies of LSE and LUMS they can get admission in IBA for very affordable fee. Institute of Business Administration is offering MBA program for quit a few years and their MBA's are preferred but not so much. Its not to long ago when IBA started Bachelors of Business Administration and they haven't produce their first batch yet, first batch is currently doing their internship in different government and private organizations. Lets have some quick review of IBA in different categories.

HISTORY: Longtime ago Punjab University established Department of Business Administration in 1972 which was upgraded to Institute of Business Administration in 1987 that was a milestone as they were the second to offer business studies at this level. They shifted to their existing building 1994 and got addition of one more campus 4 years ago.

BASIC INFORMATION: IBA Lahore is situated in Punjab University Quid-e-Azam campus. Its specialized institute in business administration field and producing some gentlemen and women to compete in market.

STUDENT TALK: Okay here is my favourite part Students Talk. While talking to some pretty faces I came to know much about IBA i.e they were satisfied with building and class rooms. A student of BBA final year give me quick snap of IBA in these words " well Mr Shahzaib our building and rooms are good, computer lab and library is also up-to-date, faculty is normal is normal some professors are good but most of them are new, cafe is fargh(bad), studies are not tough, girls common room is good but not air conditioned and overall environment is good". After this much comprehensive review I was really impressed with her and wonder that if all the students got this much confidence and communication power or not.

FACILITIES: Facilities at IBA Lahore are Average. Yes despite of students' satisfaction I personally feel that there is enough space for improvement. Computer lab is maintained well with high speed Internet connectivity, new building class rooms are fine and overall building is nice. Lawns are although green but not crafted to standards. Cafe is below average with little variety and low standard food I found many IBA-ians crossing the road for Mass Com's cafe.

MARKET WORTH: Market demand of IBA students is good but starting pay is not as much high as one can expect. Some companies hire students directly from IBA including Coca Cola, Suzuki, Engro Foods. IBA place students for internship in big government organizations including Stat Bank Of Pakistan, Sui Gas, National Bank, Fauji Foundation etc and Private firms like Coca Cola, Nestle, PC etc. So for job placement and market worth IBA can be eligible for Average+ but as far as pays are concerned Average could be enough.

PROGRAMS OFFERED: Main feature of IBA's programs is PhD in business Administration other programs are listed below.

  • BBA Hons (Morning/Evening)
  • MBA (Morning)
  • MBA (Evening)
  • MBA (1 year)
  • PhD
  • PGD - Post Graduate Diploma (Evening)
  • PGD - Post Graduate Diploma in Agri-business Management (Evening)

WEBSITE: IBA don't have its own website but there is a link on PU's webstie that can be reached by click here .
